Heathcote Wine Region is located approximately 80 minutes north of Melbourne CBD and borders the Macedon Ranges region immediately to its south.
In Heathcote, Shiraz is king. However our Heathcote Wine Tour will show you producers doing excellent things with other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, European/Mediterranean varieties such as Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Nero D'Avola.
Prominent and emerging white varieties include Viognier, Riesling, Fiano, Marsanne and Rousanne.
Running north - south for approximately 100 kilometres, Heathcote delivers some diversity in both climate and soil types; producers in the south have a cooler climate and are sited on granite soils resulting in leaner, more mineral profiled wines. In the warmer centre and northern parts of Heathcote we see more generous fruit driven styles showing elegance and power.
Like its southern neighbour, Heathcote is mostly populated with small family owned and operated enterprises. One significant difference is the presence of major producers such as Treasury Wine Estates and Brown Brothers owning vineyards or vineyard leases in the region but no production or cellar door facilities.
This speaks to the high regard winemakers have for Heathcote grapes.
